Nonlinear optical techniques for high coherent power from diode lasers

Abstract

Array outputs are often not diffraction limited due to random relative phases between elements. However, if the elements are locked, then the dynamic hologram produced by nonlinear optical two-wave mixing can combine the outputs of these elements and can convert the combined output into any desired spatial profile. We believe we are the first to demonstrate this by combining the outputs of two single element lasers, and by combining the output of a single element laser with a linear array. We also describe other roles for nonlinear optics, such as efficient coupling by phase conjugation for locking and for MOPA configurations.
