Abstract
This tutorial starts with the single-defect single-charge-carrier rate equation model for the photorefractive effect first presented by Vinetskii and Kukhtarev in 1974. Results for important physical parameters such as beam-coupling gain, response time, and photorefractive sensitivity are given for this model, and extensions of the basic model to include two charge carriers, two or more defect levels, shallow donors, or acceptors are discussed. Correspondence between the rate equation model and the hopping model and conventional semiconductor results is given.
