Abstract
This tutorial concentrates on how grating (modulated-index) structures are used in thin-film optics. The basic concepts of reflection and transmission through grating structures, consisting either of multiple layers or periodic structures in a film surface, are presented. The use of gratings in linear and nonlinear integrated optics is introduced.
