Optical beam smoothing techniques for inertial fusion

Abstract

High gain laser fusion requires a highly uniform spherical pellet implosion. For direct drive, the individual optical beams that illuminate the pellet must therefore have smooth and controllable focal profiles. The Naval Research Laboratory has developed two techniques to generate such profiles by introducing a controlled amount of spatial incoherence in the laser; we discuss these, and compare them with related techniques developed at other laboratories.
