Discussion of MTF measurement of fiber optic face plates

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

A process for measurement of modulation transfer function on fused fiber optic faceplates and other similar optical systems has been developed. The test technique quantifies the influences of fused fiber optic design parameters on imaging systems such as image intensifiers. Theoretical considerations regarding the effects of nonisoplanaticism, the required mathematical assumptions, and the modified test conditions for accurate and repeatable measurements are outlined and discussed. A commercial MTF measurement system utilized for traditional lens metrology was customized to be application specific to coherent fiber optic imaging systems. This paper also discusses measurements which illustrate some of the practical implications of the array structure of fused fiber optics in contrast to the resolution properties of aberration-free lens systems. Results from experiments are compared to some theoretical predictions.
