Hybridly mode-locked dye lasers: theory and experiment

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

We present a semiclassical model for a synchronously pumped mode-locked dye laser with a saturable absorber included in the cavity, a hybridly mode-locked laser. The model is verified through comparison with experiments performed on a Quantronix Nd:YLF pumped hybridly mode-locked dye laser operating with separate jets of rhodamine 6G and DODCI/DQOCI solutions. The effects of varying the absorber molarity and the saturation pararmeter are mapped theoretically for the two different saturable absorber dyes, DODCI and DQOCI. The nonlinear model is general enough to allow the numerical study of semiclassical and dipole orientational effects, and we show that the inclusion of these points is important for quantitative agreement with experiment.
