Computational theory of shape from shading and motion

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

I describe a closed-form solution to the problem extracting shape information from image shading that uses only biologically plausible linear filters together with point nonlinearities. I then describe how, by adding a temporal dimension to this simple shape from shading mechanism, it may be extended to produce estimates of surface reflectance, object rotation, and surface shape from the photometric effects of object motion.
