Abstract
A significant technological hurdle for optical computing and optical pattern recognition is the current state of performance of spatial light modulators (SLMs). Key performance characteristics of an SLM includes speed, resolution, contrast, and costeffectiveness. The contrast ratio, resolution, and response time of an optically addressed ferroelectric liquid crystal SLM, recently developed by the University of Colorado-Boulder, have been experimentally determined. Furthermore, preliminary research relating to the implementation of this SLM as an input and filter plane device in a joint transform correlator has been performed.
