High frequency, high voltage capacitor charging power supply

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

A high frequency, high voltage power supply employing a series resonance inverter has been developed for applications where compact, lightweight, high repetition rate, efficient capacitor charging is required. The power supply has a capacitor charging capability of 10 kJ/s at 25 kV. By using parallel MOSFETS operating at up to 80 kHz and controlling the duty cycle of the series resonance inverter, 0.1% regulation was achieved. The high voltage transformer is a modular pancake design which has a self-resonance of 750 kHz and a turn ratio of 1:125 resulting in good coupling. Uses are in pulsed power and lasers where high repetition rate capacitor charging with high accuracy is required.
