Abstract
Semiconductor growth techniques, such as molecular beam epitaxy, allow the growth of 1-D potential well structures and lead to the observation of novel electronic and optoelectronic effects. In particular the confinement of electrons and holes by potential barriers leads to novel effects under application of an electric field perpendicular to the layers, such as the quantum confined Stark effect.
