Abstract
The attenuation of visible and near ultraviolet light by the atmosphere will exhibit a wavelength dependence. This wavelength dependence can be quite variable as a result of variation in concentrations of gaseous absorbing species and in the optical properties and concentrations of aerosol particles. There are currently relatively few horizontal path determinations of atmospheric transmittance at wavelengths shorter than 500 nm. To investigate this wavelength dependence, we have measured atmospheric transmittance for a series of visible and ultraviolet wavelengths between 200 and 550 nm in different atmospheric conditions. These measurements were made using a filter wheel transmissometer setup to measure transmission across an approximately horizontal path. As part of the measurement program, simultaneous determinations of visibility were made.
