Abstract

Ferroelectric liquid crystals (FLCs) are currently used in combination with fixed waveplates and polarizers to make rapidly tunable in (100 kHz to 10 MHz) optical filters. These include discretely tunable filters using bistable SmC* FLCs1 and continuously tunable filters using analog SmA* FLCs.2 Current work indicates that high-resolution, high-peak-transmission filters can be constructed with only liquid crystal cells and polarizers.
