Abstract
Using the Maxwell-Bloch equations for a two-level atom with longitudinal space and time, we study the effects of various traveling waves in a homogeneous and an inhomogeneous amplifier using different pumping schemes. These schemes include functional dependence such as F(z/t-v) and Gaussian structures. When pump is pulsed at different time intervals (tp), an exponential growth in the average intensity as a function of tp is seen fora given functional form of the pump. Investigations of unstable behavior are illustrated.
