True three-dimensional capture and illusory contours

Abstract

Several intriguing demonstrations with stereoscopically presented subjective contours and capture have been presented in recent years. Examples include (1) subjective squares with "Pac-men" inducing figures whose "bites" are presented in disparity, and (2) random-dot stereograms with sparse dots that capture the background. Different depth planes are present, but all perceived objects are surfaces (either flat or curved) rather than true volumetric entities.
