Mathematical reconstruction of color-matching functions

Abstract

We have calculated the FFT's of the colormatching functions for the CIE1931 standard observer referred to the XYZ primaries and also a set of real primaries. The results obtained agree with those of Barlow1 on applying the Fourier transform to the Smith and Pokorny's fundamental spectral sensitivities and Benzschawel et al.2 in analyzing color-vision mechanisms based on various different models. From the analysis of the Fourier transform moduli of the color-matching functions, we were able to apply the sampling theorem to get mathematical formulas which led to the reconstruction of them at limiting frequencies of 0.02 or 0.05 cycle/nm. This reconstruction proves to be highly reliable at a sampling interval of 10 nm and perfectably acceptable at 25 nm or even wider intervals.
