Abstract
A lenslet array can shift and overlap input patterns at the image plane in an appropriate arrangement. By utilizing this nature of the lenslet array, a simple optical symbolic substitution system has been constructed. The lenslet array is arranged symmetrically to the search pattern and placed behind the input pattern in the recognition phase. Then the superimposed patterns corresponding to the lenslet arrangement are formed at the image plane. The location of the search pattern corresponds to the maximum intensity position of the superimposed patterns. By thresholding the superimposed intensity, the binary pattern indicating the location of the search pattern can be recognized. A similar optical arrangement is useful in substitution phase. The lenslet array is placed according to the substitution rule and forms the superimposed pattern of the detected search patterns, which represent the replacing pattern.
