Vertical/horizontal aniosotropy in binocular summation

Abstract

Consider a task requiring a subject to detect a binocular luminance change stimulus. Threshold for an increment to one eye and an equal decrement to the other has been shown to be a sensitive indicator of the nature of the binocular interaction.1 It has long been known that vertical and horizontal lines are seen with about equal sensitivity. Nonetheless, we have discovered an orientational anisotropy for binocular summation of lines. Increment–decrement (+-) luminance change pairs for horizontal lines require more contrast than for vertical lines, with foveal viewing and 100-msec duration. The average ratio of +- threshold to ++ threshold is ~2:1 for horizontal lines and 1:7 for vertical lines.
