Abstract
A new nonlinear optical material formed by mixing methyl-(2-4-dinitrophenyl)-amino-propanoate (MAP): 2-methyl-4-nitroaniline (MNA) is grown from organic solutions. Details of the formation of the new material and its growth are given. The crystals are observed to belong to monoclinic space group P21. Preliminary structural data are given. Differential scaning calorimetric measurements show that it melts at 104.3°C. The SHG efficiency of the new material is observed to be close to that of MAP but much less than that of MNA. MNA has the largest second-harmonic coefficient reported so far. Since the new material crystallizes more readily in transparent rectangular prisms, the new material may be beneficial for devices. The optical absorption spectrum of the mixed crystal is studied in the range 500-2600 nm.
