Abstract
Taper structures are of great importance in integrated optics as mode size controllers buffering between integrated-optical circuits and fiber ends with large spot sizes. The fact that the designed taper should be fabricated cost-effectively often imposes the condition that the refractive index should not be graded. This increases the required taper length, and necessitates a method of optimal design.
