Image deblurring in the context of astronomical science: problems of validating algorithms and results

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

The spherical aberration in the primary of the Hubble Space Telescope has drastically affected the astronomical science that can be performed with the instrument. Optical correctors are planned to be installed but, until they are implemented, image restoration techniques will have to be used to recover some of the lost science from the data. The nature of the image restoration problem is unique, since while the aberrations can be accurately characterized, photon noise, detector noise, and the different instruments’ characteristics set different requirements on the restoration algorithm for each observation. Demonstration and validation of the scientific return from restored images (or spectra) will be crucial in establishing the accuracy of the results.
