Abstract
It is well accepted that Spatial Light Modulators (SLMs) of suitably high performance are key components for the implementation of many proposed optical systems. We perceive that the hybrid technology of Ferroelectric Liquid Crystal (FLC) over VLSI silicon shows promise in the medium term for the development of High Performance SLMs (HPSLMs); this perception is based on (1) the performance of custom VLSI silicon (2) the large number of LC types offering a range of optical properties and their compatibility with VLSI silicon drive voltages and (3) results we have obtained, to date, of marrying the two technologies.
