Perturbative integral expansion analysis of volume holograms

Abstract

Volume holograms have been widely used for high-density storage media and interconnections. Analysis of light diffraction from volume index gratings is important in obtaining storage and interconnection capacity limited by crosstalks caused by many superposed gratings. Until now, coupled-mode theory has been used to study light diffraction from volume gratings. However, as the number of index gratings increases, the coupled-mode equations become so complicated that it is impractical. To solve this problem, an integral equation method was proposed and it was shown to be adequate for a large number of volume index gratings. However, in the previous analysis, only TE polarizations and coplanar light and index grating wavevectors were studied. This eliminated the possibility of polarization mixing and it can not be used in real situation. In this talk, we present the results of perturbative integral expansion analysis of volume holograms which can be applied to arbitrary interaction geometries.
