Overview of technology trends in optical air data

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

This paper provides an overview of current or recently completed research and development efforts, at United Technologies Optical Systems and other organizations, that involve the use of laser or optical systems to support aircraft flight. The system areas covered include: optical systems to measure free-stream airspeed and pressure for use as input to advanced platform air data computers; laser radar systems and passive optical systems for the remote detection of hazardous wind shear; laser radar systems for obstacle avoidance and precision navigation; and a brief overview of current activity in the area of fly-by-light.
