Abstract
To improve the speed and accuracy of the optical disk-based joint transform correlator (ODJTC), one has to reduce the number of correlation and detection operations and enhance the discrimination ability of the system. For this purpose, image classification and feature enhancement techniques are investigated. A hybrid system incorporated with a ring–wedge filter in the Fourier plane is used to extract and classify the feature of a reference image. Under computer control, each ring and wedge of the filter can be individually turned on/off to display/eliminate the corresponding feature component of a particular image in the inverse Fourier plane, where the output image with its enhanced feature is obtained. When performing pattern recognition, the scan number is reduced to the image number of a particular class, and the correlation peak is mostly related to the prominent feature of the input image.
