Use of deformable mirror devices in optical logic functions

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

Weighted-outer-product processing, a generalization of the bilinear transform, plays an important role in many computing, signal processing, and image processing applications. A technique for the implementation of optical logic functions, the use of such a processor, is presented in this paper. Texas Instruments’ deformable mirror device (DMD), a 1-D spatial light modulator, allows real-time operation of such a logic function implementation by providing controllable optical encoding of the two input vectors that are required for the outer product. Using liquid crystal television and magnetooptic spatial light modulators as weighing matrices is also presented.
