Generalized eikonal approximation for larger-angle light scattering

Abstract

A generalized eikonal approximation method (GEA) has been developed by Chen for small angle light scattering.1 The GEA, using a generalized linear propagator, is able to include edge effects, and, thereby, dramatically improves the usual eikonal method. However, GEA, just as the usual eikonal method, works well only for scattering at very small angles. Here we report an interesting modification of GEA that incorporates Snell’s law in the approximation. The result is an improved GEA applicable to light scattering at angles as large as 90°. Numerical calculations for light scattering by a dielectric sphere are carried out and compared with Mie calculations.
