Abstract
Recent advances in high power semiconductor laser diode arrays has revived interest in the development of practical upconversion lasers (efficient, power/energy scalable, room temperature operation, etc.). Upconversion lasing in several bulk crystals1 and glass fibers2 doped with various rare earth ions, have been reported. To date, diode-pumpable bulk crystal upconversion lasers have only operated inefficiently at cryogenic temperatures, whereas room temperature fiber upconversion lasers with interesting efficiencies have recently been reported.2,3
