Broadband optical voltage and electric field sensor based on ferroelectric thin films

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

Lanthanum-doped lead titanate (PLZT) and lead magnesium niobate-lead titante (PMN-PT) thin film waveguides were prepared by chemical processing methods (solgel, MOD). Electrooptical effects of thin films have been investigated by using a prism out-coupling technique. The modulation sensitivity of conventional optical voltage and electric field sensors has a narrow detecting frequency band because piezoelectric effects of materials occurs at the low frequency region. New optical voltage and electric field sensors have been developed which have a constant modulation sensitivity up to high frequency components by using PLZT and PMN-PT thin films. The electrostrictive effect on optical modulation of ferroelectric thin films has been discussed also.
