Scattering of light by a coated component depends on the direction of illumination

Abstract

Scattering of light by optical components is usually deleterious to the overall performance of an optical system. The scattered light, besides being absent from the geometric image, appears where it is not expected in the form of ghosts, flare, veiling glare, etc. The scattering by surfaces, including coated surfaces, is a function of direction of illumination. The performance of an optical system may be optimized by the proper orientation of filters and by placing an optical coating on the preferred surface of a component. The overall scattering by two parallel surfaces may be predicted with equations that account for the multiple reflections at the surfaces.
