Coupling between isotropic and birefringent fibers by VBPM

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

A vectorial beam propagation method (VBPM) based on the vectorial wave equation has been developed to overcome the limitation of the existing scalar beam propagation method (SBPM). The polarizing effects of both the structural geometry, such as waveguiding boundaries, and the material properties, such as anisotropy, are included in this method. As an application of the VBPM, the circular transversely polarized (TE01) eigenmode of the isotropic fiber is propagated into the birefringent fiber of the same radius and the same index step between the core and the cladding. The effects of the birefringence, such as the loss of the circular symmetry, and the waveguiding geometry are shown. The inability of the SBPM to adequately handle this problem is demonstrated as well.
