Relationship between binocular and monocular VEPs

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

We employed the uniform field generated by a LED goggles as the stimulus to elicit VEP response. The luminance of the uniform field was modulated sinusoidally with a mean luminance of 42 cd/m2 and a temporal frequency of 2 Hz, at modulation depths of 10%, 20%, 40%, and 70%. Binocular VEPs which were the response to an identical pair of goggles presented to two eyes dioptically and monocular VEPs in response to stimulus presented to only one eye were recorded from two binocularly normal subjects. The VEPs were analyzed using a FFT. The amplitudes and phases of the first and second harmonics of the stimulus frequency were used to compare the binocular response to the sum of the monocular responses of left and right eyes. We found that, from two subjects, (1) the phases of the first and second harmonics are stable in binocular VEPs but not in monocular VEPs across the four contrasts, (2) the amplitudes of either the first or second harmonic of binocular VEPs is greater than that in monocular VEPs, (3) the first harmonic amplitude of the binocular response is greater than the sum of the left and right monocular responses, and (4) the second harmonic amplitude of the binocular response is smaller than the sum of the monocular responses. These results led us to propose an algorithm to interpret them.
