Optical evaluation of components for free-space digital optics

Abstract

Unique problems are present in optically interconnected symmetric-SEED array systems.1 Several tools and procedures were developed to evaluate the components and systems used in experiments which demonstrated the successful cascaded operation of two 2048 pixel S-SEED arrays and a fully interconnected Banyan network. A Twyman-Green interferometer operating at 850 nm was constructed to evaluate the quality of the passive components and aid in the assembly of the custom lens used in the cascade demonstration. A radially shearing interferometer was constructed to evaluate the accumulation of wavefront distortion s the light propagates through the system and aid in the assembly of a laser pen. The interferometer, a collimation tester, and a spot size analyzer were used to correct aberrations
