Abstract
A given object can have a wide range of appearances, depending on how it is illuminated. Accordingly, illumination should be designed so that, insofar as possible, the images have the desired qualities. In machine vision, a principal aim is to simplify the image, so that the subsequent computer processing is not unnecessarily difficult. For example, one ideal situation is that in which just the features of interest are seen and all others are not, so that the processing need not separate features from clutter.
