Abstract

The theoretical foundation of the Kirchhoff approximation for light scattering by optically isotropic and homogeneous crystals was presented by Muinonen.1 In that approximation, the reflected and transmitted electromagnetic near fields were calculated from geometric optics ray-tracing. The corresponding far fields were then obtained from the vector Kirchhoff integral relation. The earlier computer simulations for randomly oriented crystals were, however, based on a modified Kirchhoff approximation that included further simplifications.
