Abstract

We show that the solitons described by the derivative nonlinear Schrodinger equation (DNLS)1 may propagate in nonlinear optical fibers and have properties distinct from the well-known solitons described by the nonlinear Schrodinger equation (NLS). In particular, we show that the DNLS will give rise to bright solitons in both the normal and anomalous dispersion regions which is in sharp contrast to the NLS where bright solitons form only in the anomalous dispersion region.
