Diode laser spectroscopy of carbon and oxygen stable isotopes in CO2

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

Using tunable diode lasers it is possible to resolve individual rovibrational spectral lines within the vibrational bands of carbon dioxide and measure their absorbance. These measurements can be used to determine CO2 gas concentration and isotopic ratios of 13C/12C and 18O/16O. In the 2300-cm-1 spectral region various adjacent isotopic rovibrational lines have approximately equal absorbance at typical isotopic abundances, facilitating accurate isotopic ratio determinations. Rovibrational lines we have studied are separate by as little as 0.02 cm-1 but are well resolved using a tunable diode laser.
