Suppression of phase fluctuations in stimulated Brillouin scattering

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

We have performed an experiment to study the stability of the phase of the Stokes wave generated by stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS). Abeam from a single-mode Nd:YAG laser of 400-ns duration was split into two beams of nominally equal energy. Each of the beams was directed through a focusing lens into identical but independent Brillouin cells. The SBS reflections from the cells were interfered with each other, and the resulting interference pattern was imaged onto an optical multichannel analyzer to provide a time-integrated record of the interference pattern. Surprisingly, the time-integrated interference pattern shows large depth of modulation, even though the Stokes pulse duration is 250 times longer than the phonon lifetime.
