Abstract
The American optical industry has grown even more rapidly and extensively than the Optical Society has over the past seventy-five years. Originally limited to the production of lenses and a small catalog of scientific instruments, the optical industry now encompasses many areas of imaging, electronics, data communication, and industrial processing. Optical techniques have permeated most of the basic industries in the country, and the optical industry has traditionally been a leader in the introduction of new technology.
