Observations of the stratosphere by the CLAES instrument on UARS

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

The Cryogenic Limb Array Etalon Spectrometer (CLAES) was launched by the Space Shuttle in September 1991 as an instrument on the Upper Atmospheric Research Satellite (UARS). It measures infrared emission from the limb of the Earth's atmosphere in nine spectral regions from 3.5 to 12.7 μm. Multi-element focal plane arrays provide simultaneous signals over a range of altitudes from which profiles of stratospheric O3, H2O, CH4, N2O, CFC-F12, CFC-F11, ClONO2, HNO3, NO2, NO, and HCl are retrieved. This paper will present examples of CLAES spectra, selected vertical constituent profiles, and selected global constituent maps.
