Abstract

This tutorial describes the basic principles of the various optical-modulation techniques that can be utilized in sensing applications using fiber optics. Intensity-based and interferometric sensing techniques are covered, and a wide range of sensing systems are discussed. In particular, intensity-based sensors for engineering-type applications, such as temperature, pressure, and flow, and high performance interferometric systems for acoustic, magnetic field, and rotation (gyroscope) sensing are described in detail. Details of the techniques used with interferometric sensors for demodulation and multiplexing of sensors are also covered.
