Nonlinear dynamic effects from TE-TM coupling in periodic waveguides

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

The free carrier dynamics and all-optical switching effects in a periodic waveguide were studied in a pump-probe arrangement. A Bragg reflector resonant with the TE0 mode of the waveguide was fabricated to provide the periodicity of the structure. Two couplers were fabricated on either side of the Bragg grating to accommodate efficient coupling for a TM pump signal and TE probe signal. Nd:YAG pulsed and cw lasers at λ =1.064 μm are used as the pump and probe beams, respectively. The reflected signal from the TE0 mode was monitored to study the nonlinear dynamical effects and the free carrier dynamics in the silicon-on-insulator structure. Measurements from Bragg reflectors ranging in periods from 0.16 to 0.1625 μm at various pulse energies will be presented.
