Optimal use of SLMs in correlators

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

Conventional correlators with similar SLMs in the input and filter planes are generally designed such that the highest spatial frequency in the input object is mapped to the edge of the filter plane SLM. Simple analysis shows that the diffraction limited spot size of such a system is substantially larger than the pixel size in the filter plane. The consequences of this phenomenon for the design of optimal filters and correlators will be discussed, including the role of optical aberrations.
