Abstract
More onboard sensors coupled with the use of media for information storage and digital computers for data processing allow the modern pilot to act as a manager of information. Increased aircraft speed and traffic volume necessitate fast responses that often do not require human involvement. Thus, the evolving function of the pilot is to oversee aircraft operation, except for those circumstances that require experience and judgment for decision making. The requirements for the all-glass cockpit of the future will be discussed incorporating information management and display systems suitable for a digital map with flight routing and planning, highway in the sky, and hazard avoidance features. A potential high performance display system is described.
