Abstract

An efficient scheme is derived for adding and subtracting MSD trinary and quaternary numbers. It results in much fewer rules to be implemented then a previously proposed system. The schemes were tested and implemented using electrically programmable logic devices. For optical implementation of a nonholographic content addressable memory may be used. The quaternary system is more advantageous since conversion to/from binary is easier.
