Abstract

Of particular interest in quantum optics is the study of atom-cavity interactions in the strong coupling regime in which an intracavity photon is likely to be absorbed and reemitted before escaping into the external environment. We have recently achieved conditions appropriate to this regime in an apparatus consisting of a beam of Cesium atoms coupled to an optical resonator of finesse 330,000 and length 0.35 mm.
