Time-dependent temperature profiles and birefringence in end-pumped laser rods: noncircular pump cross section

Abstract

The impact of birefringence is relevant to the quality of laser beams. Circular pump beams of Gaussian or constant profiles causes position dependent birefringence. Noncircular end-pumped beams will produce noncircular temperature contours.
