Wide-angle Michelson interferometer for multiple-emission measurements

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

Current applications of the wide-angle Michelson interferometer have concentrated on its use as a device for measuring the Doppler shifts and widths of isolated emission lines. By coupling this device in series to an étalon or narrow band interference filter this restriction to single emission lines can be lifted. With such an approach, emissions from selected lines in a molecular band can be simultaneously observed and the rotational temperature, linewidth and emission rate measured. This has been implemented in the measurement of emissions from the O2 atmospheric band on the Wind Imaging Interferometer (WINDII) on UARS.
