Abstract
It is an axiom of Fourier optics that a lens is a spatial filter operating on the object spectrum. The spatial filter function is given by the Optical Transfer Function (OTF). For incoherent illumination, the OTF can be written as the autocorrelation of the original pupil function. For the ideal case of aberration free imagery, this autocorrelation relationship simplifies the calculation of the OTF to a simple area calculation. Inherent in this area calculation is the ability to mask the pupil to optimize the OTF.
