Abstract

A laser with a saturable absorber (LSA) shows spontaneous periodic pulsation (passive Q-switching, PQS) in the single-mode laser oscillation. Various types of periodic PQS are observed in a CO2 laser, depending on the conditions of the laser and absorber [1]. Recently we have developed a novel rate-equation model for the CO2 laser system which includes a fast vibrational relaxation of the lower laser level [2]. The model systematically reproduces almost all the PQS pulse shapes observed so far [2,3].
