Optical Interconnect Solutions to the I/O-Problem in Future CMOS Generations

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

Optical interconnect may offer a solution to the I/O problem in future CMOS systems but a major effort will be needed on integration—hybrid or monolithic—of efficient and compact transmitters and receivers as well as on alignment tolerant optical pathways. In this paper work is presented on the concerted efforts towards this goal in the EC-ESPRIT programme.
